The Saraighat Bridge, an iconic landmark of Guwahati, Assam, holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Assam and beyond. Established in 1962, the bridge spans across the mighty Brahmaputra River, connecting the north and south banks of the river and serving as a crucial link in the region's transportation network.

The history of the Saraighat Bridge is deeply intertwined with the socio-economic development of Assam. Before its construction, transportation across the Brahmaputra River was primarily reliant on ferries, which were often unreliable and subject to the whims of the river's currents and weather conditions. The need for a permanent bridge became increasingly apparent as the region experienced growth in trade, commerce, and population.

The construction of the Saraighat Bridge, named after the historic Battle of Saraighat fought between the Ahom Kingdom and the Mughal Empire in 1671, was a monumental engineering feat. Designed by the esteemed engineer Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, the bridge was built using steel girders and concrete pillars, with a total length of approximately 1.49 kilometres.

Upon its completion, the Saraighat Bridge revolutionized transportation in Assam, providing a vital link between the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra River. It facilitated the movement of goods, services, and people, fostering economic growth and development in the region. Additionally, the bridge played a crucial role in enhancing connectivity between Assam and other states in the northeastern region of India, further integrating the region into the national mainstream.

Over the decades, the Saraighat Bridge has stood as a symbol of progress and connectivity for the people of Assam. It has significantly reduced travel time and costs, improved access to essential services such as healthcare and education, and facilitated tourism and cultural exchange.

Today, the Saraighat Bridge continues to serve as a lifeline for the people of Assam and neighboring states. Its importance cannot be overstated, as it remains the primary artery for the movement of goods and people across the Brahmaputra River. However, the bridge is not without its challenges. Over the years, increased vehicular traffic and wear and tear have necessitated maintenance and repair work to ensure its structural integrity and safety.

The New Saraighat Bridge, also known as the 2nd Saraighat Bridge, is a beam bridge in India connecting the North and South banks of Assam over the Brahmaputra River. Construction began in 2007, with a total length of 1,493.58 meters and a cost of Rs 475 crore. India's largest civil engineering company, Gammon India Limited, constructed the bridge. Inaugurated on January 28, 2017, by Union minister Nitin Gadkari, it provides three lanes for road traffic and serves as a crucial link in the region's transportation network.

This includes the introduction of advanced technology for monitoring and maintenance, as well as the expansion of the bridge to accommodate increasing traffic volume. Additionally, there have been proposals for the construction of additional bridges across the Brahmaputra River to further enhance connectivity and alleviate congestion on the Saraighat Bridge.

As Assam continues to progress and develop, the Saraighat Bridge will remain a cornerstone of its infrastructure, connecting people and fostering prosperity for generations to come. Its legacy as a symbol of resilience, ingenuity, and progress will endure, serving as a testament to the indomitable spirit of the people of Assam.
