The idea for the cultural complex originated in a meeting of the Cultural Advisory Committee of the Government of Assam in August 1986.
The aim was to create a center for various cultural activities like dance, drama, music, fine arts, and literature, focusing on preserving and promoting Assam's cultural heritage.
The project was named 'Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra' and its foundation was laid on February 2, 1988, by the then Governor of Assam, Shri Bhisma Narayan Singh.
