While the city’s malls continue to line their showcases with lights and decorative items, street stalls have taken to selling green firecrackers, as there has been a notable shift towards eco-friendly choices in recent years.
Talking to GPlus, a shopkeeper in Kahilipara’s Jotiya revealed how large quantities of eco-friendly firecrackers are getting sold out at a fast rate. “The crackers from Barpeta have great allure amongst the local folk,” he said. “Barpeta crackers contain natural ingredients such as cow urine or charcoal.”
Another shopkeeper from Lal Ganesh had opted to buy from a local supplier instead of a traditional maker. “Home-made firecrackers do not have the fancy packaging that comes from the more expensive factories, but we have focused on selling quality firecrackers instead of focusing on the external packaging.”
This ongoing demand for eco-friendly crackers proves that Guwahati’s residents have shown commitment to keeping their city free of noise and air pollution this Diwali.
