Guwahati: A Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) team on Wednesday, October 6, visited a private hospital where Rajkanya Baruah – the accused in last Friday’s alleged drunken driving accident that left 8 labourers injured – got herself admitted after securing bail.
This came a day after Baruah, citing medical grounds, failed to show up at the Dispur Police Station where she was summoned for questioning in the case.
The purpose of the GMCH team’s visit was to ascertain the reasons for her hospitalisation and severity of her injuries. “We will check everything and we will forward a report (on her medical condition) to the Government,” GMCH Superintendent Abhijit Sarma told reporters on Wednesday.
On Friday, October 1, eight on-duty labourers were injured when the auto van they were travelling in was rammed into by a vehicle driven by Rajkanya Baruah, police reports said. She was on her way back from a popular 5 star hotel at the time, it is reliably learnt. Talking to G Plus earlier from her hospital bed, Baruah had denied reports that she was drunk at the time of the accident.
A case was lodged in this connection at the Dispur police station, but she was granted bail the very next day as none of the IPC sections applied against here were non-bailable. This development caused a huge public outcry and social media furore, following which a re-investigation into the entire case was directed by Assam Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma, who also holds the State Home Ministry portfolio.
Earlier, Rajkanya Baruah told G Plus that her health had deteriorated both “physically and mentally” following the accident and the “media trial” it had resulted in. She remains admitted in the semi-ICU of a private city hospital as of Wednesday.
