GUWAHATI: Ferry services operating between the north and south banks of the Brahmaputra River in Guwahati have been temporarily suspended, as per an notification issued on Wednesday.
The notification was issued by Inland Water Transport Department (IWTA) announcing the temporary suspension of ferry services between Guwahati and North Guwahati banks. Many suspected the immersion of idols in the light of Durga Puja to be the reason, but IWT official has confirmed that is not true.
Talking to GPlus the Executive Engineer of IWT said, "The water level has decreased drastically over the last few days making it not feasible for the ferries to ply. Also, we are searching for an approach route for the passengers to reach the dock."
Services are expected to resume shortly but nothing has been confirmed as of yet. Further details await.
