GUWAHATI: The Goods and Services Tax (GST) Network sent out a mass SMS to all GST registered businesses, by mistake, which created confusion and panic amongst all.

"As per QRMP scheme you are defaulted to file your GSTR-1 and 3B on monthly basis from Jan-21. To change pls visit services.gst.gov.in," stated the message.

Numerous CAs expressed their dissent over the GST Network on Twitter due to this.

G Plus spoke to Guwahati-based CA Manoj Nahata who clarified that "This message was not in respect of any default committed by tax payers rather it was intimation about by default option of quarterly return under the new return filing scheme w.e.f. 01.01.2021."

Faruq Rahman, Public Relation Officer of GST Guwahati further shed light on the said message while speaking to G Plus.

"The CBIC has introduced a new scheme called Quarterly Return Monthly Payment Scheme under which a taxpayer whose turnover during preceding F.Y. is less than 5 crore he will pay tax monthly but will file return in Form GSTR 3B & GSTR 1 quarterly. If the turnover of a particular GSTN is less than 5 crore, the system itself by default transferred this taxpayer to QRMP scheme. Now if the taxpayer does not want to avail of this scheme, he/she can change it by logging in to the website. Actually, the language should be by default and not defaulted, which is creating confusion among many."

However, after the confusion created, the tax payers later received another message which reads, "Dear ..........................., You have been retained in monthly filing frequency of returns under QRMP scheme. To change frequency visit services.gst.gov.in".
