GUWAHATI: In an operation conducted by Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIGP), Special Task Force (STF), Assam, Parthasarathi Mahanta, a covert deal involving stolen gold articles was intercepted earlier today. Acting on classified information, an STF team was directed to apprehend the persons involved, resulting in a significant breakthrough in the fight against illegal gold trafficking.
The operation unfolded when the STF team, closely tailing a blue hatchback, spotted the vehicle in Khanapara.
The car, which was heading towards Guwahati City from Meghalaya, came to a halt in the Lalganesh locality.
Shortly after, a motorcyclist arrived at the scene, and in a matter of seconds, the two parties exchanged two packets.
Taking advantage of the heavy traffic, the motorcyclist swiftly fled the scene, and the details of the event were shared by the authorities.
Undeterred, the STF team continued to follow the target vehicle as it proceeded towards Lokhra and ultimately intercepted it in the Jyotikuchi area.
The driver, identified as Himanshu Paul, a 56-year-old resident of Meghalaya, was found in possession of a packet wrapped in a newspaper.
Upon inspection, the packet was discovered to contain bundles of currency totalling ₹ 22 lakh and 70 thousand, which were promptly seized.
During questioning, Himanshu Paul admitted to selling five pieces of illegally acquired gold to the motorcyclist known as "G Marwari."
Accompanied by independent witnesses, the STF team conducted a thorough search operation at the house and successfully recovered the stolen gold.
Further investigations revealed that G Marwari is an alias of Kishan Kanwar Kadei, a 36-year-old resident of Bidasar village, Churu district, Rajasthan.
Upon reaching Kadei's rental house, the team caught him in the act of melting the five pieces of gold bars using a gold-smelting electric machine.
The gold was promptly retrieved from the machine and seized.
The total weight of the recovered gold amounted to 585 grams, with an estimated market value of ₹34 lakh.
In addition to the gold, a motorcycle which was used in the crime, was also recovered and seized.
A case has been registered at the STF PS (Police Station) under case number 07/2023, invoking sections 379/411 IPC (Indian Penal Code).
The investigations are currently underway, as the authorities strive to uncover any further details regarding the illegal gold trafficking network.
Further details await.
