Addressing a press meet, GMC Mayor Mrigen Sarania announced the decision, stating that the civic body is intensifying efforts to meet its tax collection targets for the 2024-25 financial year.
According to the mayor, out of 1.6 lakh holdings, GMC has collected property tax from 1.1 lakh households, amounting to approximately ₹82 crore. However, this revenue is below the ₹130 crore target, with nearly 50,000 property owners yet to make their payments.
To encourage early payments, GMC has also introduced incentives. "Those who clear their dues in April will receive a 10% rebate, while payments made in May will get a 5% discount,” the mayor stated. “However, from this year, late payers will face an increased penalty of 20%, up from the previous 10%."
Multiple payment options, including online applications and door-to-door collections, have also been introduced to facilitate the process.
Sarania also addressed Guwahati’s drainage concerns, announcing that over 400 drainage projects and the cleaning of five rivers have been tendered. Under "Mission Flood Free," work has been scheduled to commence on March 15.
The mayor additionally warned against unauthorised drain blockages, stating that individuals who have illegally covered or obstructed drains will face strict action.
