GUWAHATI: Despite Guwahati Jal Board starting the registration process for residents in 14 new District Metered Areas (DMAs), the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) recognizes the ongoing water challenges across the city and has decided to construct borewells in all the wards. GMC is taking steps to address water scarcity by constructing borewells and tubewells.
The areas allocated by Jal Board include prominent locations like GS Road, Rupanagar/Birubari, Fancy Bazaar/Panbazaar, and more.
Talking to GPlus, Mrigen Sarania, the Mayor of GMC stated, "Each ward has received Rs 20 lakhs for borewells and tubewells. The total budget for this initiative is Rs 12 crores, funded as per the recommendations of the Fifteenth Finance Commission."
The construction work is on track and expected to be completed by the end of February.
Talking to GPlus, Anjana Bora, the councillor of Ghoramara stated, "We will set up motors if required and the locality should form a committee to discuss where and how the pipes will be fitted as per their convenience."
The water supply project though has started in many areas, many residents are yet to apply as the project is not fully completed. The public money is being used for both the Jal Board project and the GMC’s borewells, only time will tell where the residents will get water from regularly in the future.
Mrigen Sarania clarified that even if Jal Board is carrying out the project, the borewells will help schools, Naam Ghars in many areas. The tenants of many areas will also be benefitted by the borewells.
