Led by Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah and Member of Parliament Pradyut Bordoloi, the party marched to the office of the Director General of Police in Guwahati on Thursday, April 17 to lodge a complaint against the police in this connection.
However, the marchers were stopped at a distance from the DGP's office not allowing them to proceed. They made attempts to force their way forward, but were prevented by the large number of policemen present. Following this, they held a sit-in.
Accusing the Assam police of intimidating its candidates ahead of the panchayat elections, Bordoloi said, “we have come here to hand over a memorandum to the DGP asking whether the Assam Police is working for the government or is it safeguarding the people of the state. If the police act as an agent of the ruling party, how can fair elections be held.”
“Our candidates were threatened and harassed. They are crying out from all corners of the state. We will not rest until justice is served,” said Bhupen Borah.
The Congress has strongly condemned the development, citing it a rampant attempt to suppress the voices of the opposition and undermine the electoral process.
