GMC Introduces Solid Waste Management System For 10 Wards

GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has launched a dedicated solid waste management system for 10 wards in Phase 1 of its initiative. The new system, set to go live from December 15, emphasises the shared responsibility of citizens and the GMC in effective waste management.

Key features of the new system are:

1.    Unique QR Codes: Each property (holding) in Ward Nos. 18, 28, 29, 31, 32, 33, 36, 48, 49, and 59 will be equipped with a unique QR code placed at their gates. These QR codes, linked to the property tax holding number database, will be affixed by authorised GMC staff.
2.    Waste Collection Protocol: GMC-authorized waste collection staff will visit each holding daily at pre-determined times. After collecting waste, the staff will scan the QR code, ensuring a systematic and traceable waste collection process.
3.    Segregation Requirements: The waste collection staff will only accept waste that is segregated into two categories – DRY and WET. Wet waste includes biodegradable materials like food, leaves, flowers, and garden trimmings, while dry waste encompasses non-biodegradable items such as rubber, paper, metal, plastic, footwear, sanitary napkins, and diapers.

Complaints Redressal:

1.    Citizens are encouraged to scan the QR codes at their homes and raise complaints via the dedicated Mobile Application. They should note the ticket number for reference during the follow-up on complaints.
2.    GMC has established a helpline at 8811007000, 7086053941, and 7086028339 for citizens to report issues related to solid waste management.

Service Fees and Fines:
1.    Currently, there are no service fees for residential properties (holdings). However, the existing rates for commercial, institutional, and other non-residential properties will remain unchanged.
2.    Fines for non-compliance, including littering and improper waste disposal in public places, will be imposed according to the provisions of the GMC Act 1971 and SWM Rules 2016.
