GUWAHATI: Residents of Shubham Elite in Guwahati’s Gandhi Basti area were perplexed when workers of the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) barged in to clear up a drain inside the premises of the apartment complex.

The residents suspect that either the builder made a huge mistake or there was some issue regarding permissions from the authorities.

“There are children playing outside, they took out all the scum from the drain and kept it on the side, it is so unhygienic and can spread diseases. The drain is right inside the premises, it cannot be missed. But we wonder how a government drain can exist inside a private apartment?” a frustrated resident of Shubham Elite complex said.

An official statement from the society’s welfare committee supported by the builders read, “As discussed in our AGM (Annual General Meeting), the GMC drain passing through our society has been cleaned today by GMC workers. Hope this will help, subside the water logging problems to a great extent within our society campus. We sincerely Thank and appreciate Shri Babulal Sharma for rendering his services and help for the good cause of our society.”

Although the drains were cleared, the question still remains as to how a GMC drain can end up inside a private apartment complex.

When G Plus tried talking to a top engineer from the GMC, the response was that the authorities were not aware of a drain existing through a private apartment complex but were trying their best to unclog all drains in the Gandhi Basti area.

“Drains get clogged up due to excess debris was thrown by under-conscious citizens that lead to still water and ultimately the drains start to overflow in a single flush of rain. Our priority is to clear all drains in several areas of Guwahati to stop flash floods.” the engineer added.
