GUWAHATI: Taxpayers in the city will be able to pay their property taxes from the comfort of their homes, as the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) has announced an initiative of door-to-door collection of property taxes under which Home Tax Collectors will personally visit the home of property owners to collect outstanding taxes.

Under the initiative, the GMC has appointed women from local self-help groups (SHGs) as Home Tax Collectors who will personally visit people’s houses to collect property taxes with POS machines, in order to make the process of property tax payment easier and to eradicate any confusion faced by taxpayers.

The GMC has announced a deadline of March 31 for mandatory payment of property taxes. Property owners can also pay their taxes online at gmcpropertytax.com website or at the nearest Guwahati Municipal Corporation revenue field office or customer care centres.

A few days ago, Guwahati Municipal Corporation issued warrant against over 50 properties having total unpaid arrears of more than ₹2 Crores only.

"If the arrears are not paid, these properties will be attached by Guwahati Municipal Corporation under section 189(1) and 189(2) of the Guwahati Municipal Act 1971. We urge all the citizens of Guwahati to pay their property taxes," read the notification.

Last year in 2023, the GMC had conducted an Amnesty Campaign under which property tax defaulters were allowed to pay the pending property taxes at discounted prices. In contrast, this year, the GMC has announced it will impose penalties if property owners fail to pay their taxes on time.
