Reportedly, Prasanta was suffering from depression since the past few days as he had collected huge sums of money from many persons over the years, assuring them of getting government jobs in police, Health department and Assam Secretariat. However, Kalita had failed to deliver on his promise and was under pressure to return their money. As informed by the police, “The family came to the hotel on Tuesday evening and booked the room. However, no one came out till late morning today. On suspicion, we peeped in through the ventilator, only to see all the four lying on one bed.” Two suicide notes, one addressed to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the other to Prasanta Kalita’s mother, were recovered from the hotel room by the police. Prasanta, in the two suicide notes revealed that he used to hand over money collected from gullible job seekers to one Pulin Gogoi, who is a suspended official of the State Police.
