GUWAHATI: Lt Gen Ajai Singh PVSM, the former governor of Assam and a veteran of the 1965 and 1971 wars passed away on Tuesday at the age of 88.
The office of the Chief Minister of Assam expressed condolences through Twitter, “HCM Dr @himantabiswa has expressed his deepest condolences on the demise of Lt Gen Ajai Singh PVSM, Former Governor of Assam and veteran of the 1965 & ‘71 wars. HCM recollected Lt. Gen Singh’s illustrious military career and invaluable contribution to the state and nation.”
Lt Gen Ajai Singh was appointed Governor of Assam in 2013 after serving as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the four Corps in 1992 and spending many years in the North East.
Singh acted as the governor of Jammu and Kashmir.
Born on November 20, 1934, in a farmer's family in Rajasthan, Lt Gen Ajai Singh studied at the Mayo College Ajmer and Madras University.
After completing his studies, he joined the Indian Army and was commissioned into the Poona Horse. He also witnessed the action in the Indo-Pakistani wars of 1965 and 1971.
He was also honoured with the Indian Military Academy (IMA) Sword of Honor and a silver medal.
