GUWAHATI: An alarming outbreak of food poisoning has hit the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar, with more than 50 students falling ill after consuming food from a fast-food joint located at the NIT point just outside the campus over the last two days. The suspected food items include momos, rolls, and various chicken preparations.
Several students have been hospitalised due to the severity of their symptoms. Many of them required intravenous treatment to address severe symptoms, including intense diarrhoea and dehydration, according to media reports. The cause of the outbreak has been traced back to the consumption of these food items, prompting concerns about food safety practices in the vicinity of the institution.
The food outlet located beyond the institute's gates has since been shut down. Many students were admitted to the Jeevan Jyoti Institute of Medical Sciences, while others sought medical attention at the Silchar Medical College and Hospital, according to media reports.
Speaking to GPlus, Sabera Rahman, a student of NIT Silchar, said, “We usually go that place to eat so we never suspected that something like this would happen.”
“Some students have been hospitalised, while some are still in the hostel,” Rahman further told GPlus.
The incident has raised concerns about food safety and hygiene practices, prompting authorities to take swift action to address the situation and prevent further cases of food poisoning among the student population.
