GUWAHATI: The flood situation in Assam's Baksa and Nalbari districts has worsened, leaving a trail of destruction and displacing thousands of people.
In Baksa district alone, more than 27,000 individuals from 63 villages have been affected by the deluge. The floodwaters have submerged the Barama town area and nearby regions, prompting urgent rescue efforts.
Bhupen Baro, the MLA of the Barama assembly constituency, visited the flood-affected areas and reportedly took immediate action by contacting the administration and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to coordinate the rescue operations, as per media reports.
Baro reportedly emphasised the urgency of the situation, urging the police and the Deputy Commissioner of Baksa district to take necessary steps to rescue people stranded in the flood-affected areas. He also expressed the need for additional boats to aid in the rescue efforts. Baro promptly reached out to Bodoland Territorial Council Chief Pramod Boro, who assured him of support and the establishment of relief camps.
In addition to Baksa, the neighbouring Nalbari district has also been severely affected.
Approximately 45,000 individuals across 108 villages in six revenue circles of the lower Assam district are currently submerged under floodwaters.
The village of Moiraranga in Batahghila is among the hardest hit, with about 200 families forced to seek shelter on roads and embankments, constructing temporary tents for protection.
