Floods Breach Over 500 Embankments In Assam In Last 10 Years: ASDMA

 

GUWAHATI: The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) says that every year's devastating floods have caused more than 500 embankment breaches in the state in the last ten years (2013–2022).

The state experienced the most breaches in 2015 when 283 embankment breaches were recorded.

According to ASDMA data, there were 40 breaches last year that affected more than 88 lakh people in Assam.

The authority has submitted the flood memorandum for 2022 to the ministry of home affairs, asking for over ₹3,000 crores, including over ₹1,700 crores for the water resources department, which is responsible for the repair of embankments and flood-control structures.

In 2021, five embankments were breached, compared to 24 in 2020, 38 in 2019, 25 in 2018, 26 in 2017, 26 in 2016, 31 in 2014, and 17 in 2013.
