Barpeta MLA Abdur Rahim Ahmed, Golakganj MLA Abdus Sobahan Ali Sarkar and National Students' Union of India(NSUI) chief Varun Choudhary were travelling in the three vehicles, but they were not onboard when the attack occurred.

Once an FIR was registered, the police acted swiftly to detain the perpetrators involved in the act.

According to Kaliabor Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Rupjyoti Dutta, the attack had occurred while the Congress leaders were addressing the villagers after the inauguration of a new election office.

Former Samaguri MLA and current Dhubri MP Rakibul Hussain had also visited the site, urging swift police action. “I appeal to Nagaon SP Swapnanil Deka to take immediate action. Otherwise, the administration will be responsible for any law and order issues arising from Congress workers arranging self-defence,” Hussain said.

Incidentally, Tensions between Congress and BJP supporters have been rising in Samaguri for quite some time now, with an earlier incident on Monday where suspected Congress supporters allegedly injured two BJP workers at Bogamukh village.

The polls on November 13 will fill seats vacated in five constituencies—Dholai (SC), Sidli (ST), Bongaigaon, Behali, and Samaguri. Vote counting is scheduled for November 23.
