Accordingly, the GMC has released Guppy fish, also known as Mosquito fish, into the city's drains and rivulets. These fishes are known to feed on mosquito larvae, thereby reducing the breeding of mosquitoes responsible for the spread of dengue and malaria.

Smita Roy, Deputy Mayor of Guwahati, confirmed the release of the Guppy fish as part of efforts to tackle the mosquito menace. “The release of these fish is a natural way to address the spread of mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria. We hope to see a significant decline in cases as the fish helps control the mosquito population,” she stated.

The Guppy fish initiative is part of a broader plan to eliminate the impact of dengue in the city. The GMC and local authorities are working to ensure that all waterlogged areas, which serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes, are addressed.

While it remains to be seen how effective the release of Guppy fish will be in the long term, authorities are optimistic that this anti-dengue strategy, will help safeguard the city's residents.
