The FIRs were registered at the Umrangshu Police Station on Friday, January 10.
Filed by Congress members Kome Kemprai and Pitush Langthasa, the FIR alleged that the couple flouted the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and Supreme Court’s bans on rat-hole mining.
“These illegal activities are not only in clear violation of judicial and statutory directives but have also resulted in significant loss of human life and environmental degradation,” the FIR further stated. “The matter necessitates urgent attention and a thorough investigation.”
Illegal coal mining has long been a contentious issue in Dima Hasao, exacerbated by recent controversies at the Tin Kilo coal mine in Umrangshu. The crisis has spotlighted alleged political involvement in unlawful mining operations.
Earlier, in November 2023, a challan issued by the Assam Mining Development Corporation (AMDC) reportedly linked Kanika Hojai to illicit activities, deepening concerns over political connections to the trade.
