GUWAHATI: A devastating fire completely destroyed a market at Kayakuchi in Barpeta district early on Friday, April 4. The fire, which started around 2.30 AM, could be doused only by around 6 AM. There were no casualties.

According to local sources, the market housed shops selling assorted items. “There were about 90-100 shops,” a local resident said. He said a similar fire had occurred last year, too after which a permanent building was built to house the market.
Authorities are investigating to ascertain the reason of the fire. “We can’t tell immediately. We will have to see what caused the fire,’ a fire brigade official said.
