GUWAHATI: Two incidents of bike lifting that were reported from a family in Guwahati city within 37 days have raised serious questions about public safety in the city. The victim has complained about public security in Guwahati through G Plus saying that the city is not safe anymore.

On July 25, Vikash Agarwal, a resident of Athgaon lodged an FIR at the Basistha Chariali Police Station saying that his Royal Enfield motorcycle was stolen from the Forest Gate area near the Basistha Mandir. The area has no CCTV camera coverage and so the police failed to trace the motorcycle.

While speaking to G Plus, the Officer-In-Charge of the Basistha Police Station said, “An investigation is underway. There was no CCTV camera installed in that area. We are trying to trace the bike.”

This is not the first incident of missing motorcycle in the family of Vikash Agarwal. A month ago Vikash’s brother Vivek Agarwal also lost his motorcycle. His Royal Enfield motorcycle was stolen in the area of Md Tayabullah Road, near Dighali Pukhuri, at around 7 PM on June 18. The bike was registered in his uncle’s name. Vivek Agarwal approached the police and lodged an FIR at the Latasil Police Station.

Vivek approached G Plus to draw the attention of Guwahati residents to increasing crime in the city.

Speaking to G Plus, Vivek said, “Guwahati is not safe anymore. Around one month back my bike was stolen, and a few days ago my brother’s bike was stolen. Three days ago my friend’s autorickshaw was also stolen. All these incidents took place within one month. The police department needs to be more vigilant.”

G Plus also talked with the Officer-In-Charge of Latasil Police Station. The OC said, “The investigation is ongoing. We checked all the CCTV cameras installed nearby. We haven’t got any clue. This is not, in fact, the first case, there are many cases of bike lifting being reported. We can’t give a hundred percent assurance, we can try.”
Further details are awaited.
