The poster falsely linked the event to the university’s upcoming 32nd convocation, which will be attended by President Droupadi Murmu. Following the discovery of the graphic, the university’s authorities put out a statement via their social media handle on X on Saturday, April 19.

“Gauhati University acts firmly against misinformation, debunking a fake poster about a Bollywood performance on 25 April,” the university stated. “GU urges all to rely only on official sources as it prepares for its 32nd Convocation, graced by Hon’ble President Smt Droupadi Murmu.”

“A poster purporting to be from Gauhati University and announcing a Bollywood singer’s performance in the Univ on April 25, 2025, is circulating online & is fake,” the university also clarified in an earlier post. “Please disregard it and rely only on official University channels for accurate updates.”

The university administration lodged the complaint with Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh, stating that the deliberate spread of misinformation could disrupt public order and pose security challenges.

A day before the complaint, Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota had visited the campus on April 17 to inspect preparations for the convocation. He held meetings with Vice-Chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta and senior officials, including the Guwahati Commissioner of Police and IG Security, to oversee the security arrangements.
