GUWAHATI: A suspicious bright light from an unidentified flaring object was seen in Dibrugarh skies on July 25 at around 7:30 pm.

The same was captured on lenses and as many speculated it to be the Neowise Comet which is currently visible from earth.

Many of these pictures captured had been doing rounds on various social media platforms and regional channels that the object witnessed in the dark was the Comet - Neowise.

However, discarding all speculations, Babul Bora, Curator of the Guwahati Planetarium informed G plus that the object was certainly not the comet Neowise.

“Althought it is close to earth, that distance is calculated in astronomical units. It's not possible to be so visible to the naked eye or through lenses from Assam currently. Further the light is divided into two parts and is in reddish colour. A comet is always one solid structure, not divided,” said Bora.

Stephen Styris, an astrophotographer from Guwahati said, "The sky over refineries and other constantly burning places often have a red glow. The Easter sky of Dibrugarh is generally reddish; from even before the Baghjan incident, so is the sky over Bongaigaon refinery. These pictures are not of the comet,” said the astroenthusiast, talking to G Plus.

The same was confirmed by Babul Bora, however, the curator added, "Chances of this being a meteor are high. Although meteors like comets are also not divided into two light forms, but these are photos captured in lenses and not seen regularly. So it cannot be confirmed. But I would like to believe it to be a meteorbut definitely not the Neowise Comet."
