GUWAHATI: The Assam Police have found that an expelled Congress member was behind the ferocious attack on a convoy of the party’s Lok Sabha MP Pradyut Bordoloi, on Sunday, April 27, when he was returning from a panchayat election campaign. Congress MLA Shivamoni Bora was also with Bordoloi when the attack took place at Dumdumia, Dhing in Nagaon district.

Police have identified the mastermind as Imdadul Islam, a resident of Bhuragaon in Morigaon district, who was expelled from the party two days before the incident happened. A few people from Nagaon and Morigaon districts carried out the attack.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Akhilesh Kumar Singh told newspersons at Batadrava Police Station on Monday, April 28, that the attackers have been identified and efforts were on to apprehend them. Singh was flanked by Nagaon Superintendent of Police Swapnaneel Deka, who named Islam as the one who had planned the attack.
In the immediate aftermath of the attack, Bordoloi had put the blame on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma describing him as the ‘sardar’ of the criminals, but asserted that the Congress cannot be cowed down by such intimidation. The police’s revelation now adds a contrary dimension to the case.
Meanwhile, a delegation of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee met the Director General of Police (DGP) to apprise him of the attack on Bordoloi and Bora. They submitted a memorandum urging the police to act impartially in the investigation of the incident.
The panchayat elections in the state will be held in two phases on May 2 and 7.
