Speaking at a launch demo event held on Monday, February 17, Musk reportedly stated, “We’re very excited to present Grok-3, which is, we think, an order of magnitude more capable than Grok-2 in a very short period of time.”

xAI presented benchmark results suggesting that Grok-3 outperforms some of the most well-known AI models, including Google’s Gemini 2 Pro, DeepSeek V3, and OpenAI’s GPT-4o. According to the company, most notable improvements from Grok-3 were seen in science, coding, and mathematics.

A major new feature is the DeepSearch tool, an AI-powered search engine that not only answers queries but also explains its reasoning. A similar tool, DeepResearch, was previously launched by Perplexity AI.

Musk also explained the inspiration behind the chatbot’s name, referencing Robert Heinlein’s novel Stranger in a Strange Land. He noted that "Grok" means to fully and profoundly understand something, a concept central to the chatbot’s design.

Developing Grok-3 required significant infrastructure investment. xAI executives revealed that the company built its own data centre in just four months, deploying 100,000 GPUs in 122 days and doubling that capacity in another 92 days.

Grok-3 is now available for Premium+ subscribers on X (formerly Twitter), while a new subscription plan, SuperGrok, is being introduced for users on the Grok mobile app and Grok.com.
