GUWAHATI: Sugarcane farmers in different parts of Kathiatali, within the Kampur revenue circle in Nagaon district, are reportedly grappling with the increasing menace of wild elephants encroaching into their sugarcane fields.
The large elephant herd, reportedly descending from the Kandali hills in search of food, have created a wave of distress among farmers, causing extensive damage to crops and property.
During the night, the elephants traversed National Highway 36, creating a reign of terror in various regions, according to media reports. The villages of Teliaati and Begenati have borne the brunt of this wildlife incursion, with the elephant flock devouring substantial portions of sugarcane fields and causing damage to farmers' trees.
Despite already facing significant losses due to floods and drought, the plight of the impoverished farmers has worsened as they struggle to protect their sugarcane crops from the threat posed by wild elephants.
