Election Commission To Take Action Against Fake Social Media Posts

 

GUWAHATI: The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar has announced the role misinformation plays during any election.

This year, the CEC has announced that political parties advised to ensure responsible social media behaviour.

He further announced that the originators of fake news to be dealt with  severely as per extent laws. Under Section 69 and 79 (3) B of IT Act, authorities of each state is empowered now to take down social media post if it spreads misinformation.

In each district, a thorough training programme has been completed who have received specific SOPs to deal with fake news and misinformation.

"On eci.gov.in a section will soon be LIVE – Myth vs Reality, to spread more awareness," CEC said.

“We appeal to the public to check what you see in social media and not fall for it immediately. Check from your side,” CEC further said.

The CEC made this announcement in the press conference currently ongoing at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.

The election dates for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections are expected to be announced shortly, along with the election dates of several state legislative assembly elections.
