Eight Child Labourers Rescued In Assam's Sonapur

GUWAHATI: Eight children, aged between 14 and 16 years, were rescued from garages and construction sites in Sonapur on Thursday, December 12, 2024.

The rescue operation was conducted by the Sonapur Police in coordination with the Labour Department, the District Task Force for Child Labour, and NGOs including the Assam Centre for Rural Development (ACRD), Bachpan Bachao Andolan, and Child Friendly Guwahati. 

Based on specific information, the team carried out raids in multiple locations. The children were removed from their workplaces and have been temporarily placed in a safe shelter. They will be presented before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) to determine the next steps in their rehabilitation process. 

Talking to GPlus, Prerna Changkakati, Executive Director of ACRD, said, “We are committed to addressing child labour issues and ensuring the rights of children are protected. This operation is an important step in that direction.”
