Editorial | Assam’s Class 12 Results Expose Systemic Failures

Over the past decade, Assam's Class 12 examination results have exhibited a concerning downward trajectory, reflecting systemic challenges within the state's education framework. While the 2025 results across Arts, Science, and Commerce streams showed pass percentages above 80%, these figures mask a deeper issue: a significant decline from previous years. The Arts stream, once a stronghold, has witnessed the most dramatic fluctuations. In 2016, the pass percentage stood at 79.92%, but by 2023, it had plummeted to 70.12%, marking the lowest in a decade. Although there was a rebound in 2024 to 88.36%, 2025 saw a modest recovery to 81.03%, still reflecting a long-term decline. The Science stream, traditionally the most consistent, experienced a sharp rise during the pandemic year of 2021, with a pass percentage of 99.06%. However, this was an anomaly due to alternative evaluation methods. In 2025, the pass percentage settled at 84.88%, lower than pre-pandemic levels, indicating that the disruptions have had a lasting impact. The Commerce stream mirrored this trend, with a notable dip to 79.57% in 2023, followed by a recovery to 87.66% in 2024, and a slight decline to 82.18% in 2025.

The vocational stream remains the most underperforming, with a pass percentage of 68.55% in 2025. This highlights persistent issues such as inadequate infrastructure, lack of trained educators, and limited industry exposure, which continue to hinder its effectiveness. These declining trends underscore the urgent need for comprehensive educational reforms in Assam. Addressing infrastructural deficits, enhancing teacher training, and implementing consistent evaluation methods are crucial steps toward reversing this downward spiral and ensuring a brighter future for students in the state.
