GUWAHATI: Boragaon’s Gakhir Chowk area in Guwahati is set to undergo significant development, with new roads and drainage system being planned to address long-standing infrastructural challenges.

This aims to improve connectivity and resolve different issues, which have been a persistent problem for residents.

The project in Nepali Basti, Boragaon will involve the construction of durable roads and a well-designed drainage system to ensure efficient water management during heavy rain. The development is expected to ease life for residents and streamline commute and transportation in the area.

There were huge issues faced by the locals and the residents of the area with many fearing it to be long-standing neglected locality. Issues such as unmetalled roads and improper management of these prevailed for a long time.

Speaking to GPlus, Simanta Singha, a resident of the area, said, ” I have been living there for the past eight years, and during this time, the road condition has only worsened. The worst part is during emergencies. God forbid if someone has to be taken to hospital and needs to travel on that road; the patient will only get worse due to the jerking caused by the poor condition. It’s even worse during the monsoon when the road becomes muddy. Many times, vehicles have slipped and fallen, and cars have got stuck in the mud. Although the authorities say they will fix it, it has been many months, and they are only working on the drains, not the road. I hope the road gets fixed soon.”

Another resident Laxman Sharma, said, “The road was metalled only once, around 10–12 years ago, and since then, it hasn’t been repaired. We have filed many complaints with the authorities, but they have gone in vain. However, this time, we are hopeful to see some progress. They are currently working on the drains and have promised to repair the roads afterward. Though the process is still slow, I am happy to see some progress.”

Talking to GPlus, Majula Devi, the GMC ward councillor of the area (11) said, “Although the progress is on the way, it is difficult to predict as to when the work will be completed. The projects are handed over by PWD to the contractors who already have multiple projects on hand. So, they are unable to concentrate on one.  But, we are positive and hope for the best as this project started in March 2024 and has been underway since.”

The timeline for the completion of the project has not yet been announced, but authorities have assured that work will commence soon, with locals hoping for a solution to their problems in the near future.
