GUWAHATI: As the festive season approaches, the call for a complete ban on the sale and consumption of liquor during religious festivals has started gaining momentum in Assam. The appeal to impose a carpet ban on liquor during these occasions was directed to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a letter from Brahmon Sobha.
In their message to CM Sarma, Brahmon Sobha highlighted their concerns regarding the prevalent practice of selling and consuming alcohol in the state during these occasions. While acknowledging that the sale of liquor under government licenses contributes significantly to state revenue, they also expressed regret over the negative consequences it brings.
One of the primary concerns raised by the organisation is the rise in road accidents, particularly due to drunken driving, during festive seasons. They applauded the government's efforts to address this issue but emphasised the need for more comprehensive measures.
The organisation urged Sarma to consider a total ban on the sale and consumption of all types of liquor during religious festivals. They highlighted the cultural significance of these occasions and the adverse effects of alcohol consumption on society. The organisation argued that the consumption of liquor contradicts the spiritual nature of these festivals and has a detrimental impact on the state's younger generation.
The letter also cited the CM's previous initiatives to ban products like “gutkha” and other tobacco substances in Assam.
