Delhi All Set For Assembly Elections On February 5; Keen AAP-BJP Contest On Cards

GUWAHATI: The Delhi Assembly elections are set to take place in a single phase on Wednesday,  February 5, with the votes scheduled for counting on February 8. A total of 699 candidates will compete across 70 constituencies, making this election a crucial test for the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) governance and the political future of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress in the national capital.

The high-voltage election campaign concluded on Monday evening, following a series of roadshows, public meetings, marches, and bike rallies by major political parties. AAP’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal, along with other party leaders, led a final roadshow in New Delhi’s Kalkaji constituency, supporting Delhi Chief Minister and party candidate Atishi. With campaigning over, the mandatory silence period has commenced, prohibiting political activity until polling begins at 7 AM on Wednesday.

Since the announcement of the election schedule on January 7, top political figures—including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal, and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi—have aggressively campaigned across the city. The contest has been marked by sharp accusations, with the BJP alleging corruption within the AAP, while Kejriwal’s party highlighted its achievements in education and healthcare.

Both the AAP and BJP targeted Purvanchali voters, a significant electoral group in Delhi, by promising grand Chhath Puja celebrations and incorporating Bhojpuri campaign songs into their outreach. However, the campaign also witnessed intense political clashes, with Kejriwal accusing the BJP, Election Commission, and Delhi Police of working together to undermine AAP’s chances. Both parties have exchanged allegations of voter manipulation, adding to the charged political atmosphere
