Decision to Close Provincial Madrassas Not Final, Says Assam Government

GUWAHATI: The Assam government's decision to shut down all state-owned madrassas is not the final decision.

This was said by a representative of the state in the Gauhati High Court in response to a writ petition, number WP-C 4766/2020 filed by students of the madrassas.

Seventeen students filed a petition contending the government's decision to shut down the institution and stated that it would adversely affect the prospects of the petitioners.

Justice Achintya Malla Bujor Barua stated in the order "The Government Authorities are conscious and aware of the adverse consequences that the students pursuing their education in the Madrassa stream may have to face in the event of abrupt closure without any effective alternative".

“The grievances of the petitioners as reflected from the interim prayer is that the Madrassa institutions should not be immediately closed down as because it may adversely affect the prospects of the students who are presently pursuing the course has also been taken care of. Infact, we can not but agree with the submission of the learned senior counsel that in the given circumstances as indicated above by the state government authorities, this writ petition is presently premature," the order read.

Earlier, Assam education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed about the closure of the provincial madrassas across the state, and the Director of Secondary Education was asked to shift the 148 contractual teachers of such institutions to other schools under the department.
