GUWAHATI: A video circulating on social media has drawn attention to the poisoning of doves in and around the Barpeta area of Assam, as reported on June 26. In the video, a concerned citizen revealed that certain substances were being added to crops consumed by doves, leading to their deaths.

In response to the report, Aaranyak, a biodiversity conservation group, expressed deep concern over the incident and called on the authorities to take action against those responsible. On Tuesday, Aaranyak took to Twitter, stating, "We express deep concern over the massive #BirdDeath reported in Barpeta district of #Assam due to #poisoning. We appeal to village headmen & VDPs to initiate #awareness, also requesting the authority to take actions as per the law."

The video shared on social media depicted birds dying after consuming crops sprayed with poisonous substances by the accused in an attempt to keep them away. A local resident, while speaking to the media, stated, "I noticed several birds dying one by one, which raised my concern. Upon further investigation, I discovered that a man from our village had sprayed poisonous substances on his crops, resulting in the death of the birds that consumed them. I requested them to cover the crops with nets to prevent birds from consuming them, but my pleas went unanswered."
