Cyber Crime not an immediate threat in Assam: Secretary of state IT dept

GUWAHATI: Cyber crime is not an immediate threat in the state due to lack of widespread internet availability, said Vinod Seshan, Secretary, Information & Technology Department of Assam at the CII brainstorming session on cyber crime held at NEDFi house, Guwahati on June 25.

Seshan explained that in Assam, if some areas do have internet, their accessibility comes to question as the download and upload speeds might not be upto par.

"We recently conducted a scan on the fibre needed to connect every village, every goan panchayat in Assam with at least 2 mbps connectivity and found that the state needs 90,000 kms of optical fibre to ensure that every single gaon panchayat and revenue village in Assam is connected," he stated.

While cases of banking fraud are reported throughout the state, instances of cyber crime are comparatively low compared to the rest of the country.

"However, lack of internet connectivity has given us the time and opportunity to create systems to better prepare for these crimes and attacks when and if it does occur in the future," said Seshan.
