GUWAHATI: As the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2019 was cleared in the Rajya Sabha, several people in Assam are still coming to terms with the Government’s decision. Protestors took to the streets late last night after the bill was passed and carried out rallies shouting slogans of “Joi Aai Axom”. Riot Guns were fired in the air to disperse the protestors at the Ulubari area late evening on 11 December.

Although a curfew has been imposed in the city indefinitely (until normalcy is restored), people in Guwahati have come out in numbers to defy the curfew and are protesting the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill. With the situation extremely tense in the city and several parts of the state, the entire Northeast has plunged into chaos.

Vehicles were stranded in various parts of the city after roadblocks were set up by agitators. Plastic dividers, vehicles and barricades were burnt. Reportedly, houses of BJP and AGP leaders were also attacked in various parts of the state.
