GUWAHATI: In light of the coronavirus pandemic, the Maa Kamakya Devalaya has decided not to host the Ambubachi Mela this year.

In a notice issued by the Devalaya, it was informed that only the religious rituals will be performed and no pilgrims would be allowed to visit during the occasion.

As such the people residing in the proximity of the temple and those who offer rented houses to accommodate pilgrims have been asked not to take any bookings for this year.

The Ambubachi Mela is a religious festival held every year during the monsoon season, after the temple remains closed for three days to celebrate the yearly menstruation course of Maa Kamakhya. Lakhs of pilgrims throng the city for the occasion.

In 2019, the budget allocated for the Mela was Rs. 2.6 crores and the Mela witnessed a footfall of more than 25 lakh devotees.

This year the Ambubachi rituals will take place from June 22-26, excluding the mela.
