Congress Removes Supriya Shrinate Over Controversial Tweet Allegedly Targeting Kangana Ranaut

GUWAHATI: Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party has taken a step concerning Supriya Shrinate, removing her from her position as the head of its social media department. This action comes in response to a contentious tweet aimed at actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut, media reports stated.

Supriya Shrinate, who previously contested the Maharajganj seat in Uttar Pradesh during the 2019 polls without success, has been omitted from the Congress party's eighth list of candidates for the Lok Sabha election. Instead, Virendra Chaudhary has been nominated by the Congress to contest from the Maharajganj constituency.

The controversy surrounding Supriya Shrinate stemmed from a now-deleted social media post targeting Kangana Ranaut, who is running as a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate in Mandi. Allegedly, Shrinate posted an offensive comment regarding Ranaut, although she later clarified, stating, "Those familiar with me would understand that I would never make such remarks about a woman. However, I recently discovered a parody account misusing my name on Twitter (@Supriyaparody), which initiated the entire misunderstanding and has since been reported."

Kangana Ranaut replied over the deleted post, saying, "Every woman deserves respect, regardless of her profession... What hurt me the most was the 'Mandi' reference, which is known as Chota Kashi and holds significant spiritual importance."

Ranaut directly addressed Supriya Shrinate on the X platform, detailing her diverse portrayals of women throughout her career as an artist.

Numerous BJP leaders have condemned the Congress party and Shrinate's remarks.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has issued show-cause notices to Supriya Shrinate, deeming her remark a violation of the Model Code of Conduct. The Election Commission has requested a response to the show-cause notices by the evening of March 29.
