GUWAHATI: Congress MP Rakibul Hussain on Thursday, February 20, strongly condemned an attack on him, alleging that lawlessness is on the rise due to the inaction of the state government. The incident took place earlier on the same day at Natun Bazar in Rupahihat when he was on his way to attend a Congress workers' meeting in Gunabari.

According to reports, a group of masked individuals waved black flags at Hussain before launching an assault. His bodyguard was also attacked during the chaos, prompting security personnel to fire warning shots in the air to prevent further escalation.

Reacting to the incident, Hussain said that the Assam government is enabling such attacks by failing to take action against offenders. “These people have been given a free hand by the authorities. They believe they can even take lives without facing consequences,” he remarked.

Taking aim at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Hussain claimed that the CM was attempting to divert public attention. “Himanta Biswa Sarma himself is facing a security threat and is trying to politically survive by shifting focus to irrelevant matters. But let me assure you, in 2026, he will no longer be the Chief Minister,” he declared.

His son, Tanzil Hussain, also spoke out, highlighting the severity of the attack. “My father is not just a political leader; he represents a constituency of 24 lakh people. If a sitting MP is not safe, one can only imagine the security of the common people. This government has failed in ensuring public safety,” he asserted.

Several Congress leaders condemned the attack, calling it a failure of the BJP-led Assam government. Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi also denounced the incident, terming it a direct result of the administration’s inability to maintain law and order.

Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah criticised the government as well, drawing parallels to a past attack on himself. “I was attacked in broad daylight, and nothing was done. Now Rakibul Hussain has been targeted in a similar manner. This is clear evidence of political hooliganism under BJP rule,” he said.
