The incident occurred in the evening time where the shocking footage shared on social media shows Shubhada kneeling on the ground after the assault, with bystanders failing to intervene as the assailant menaced her with the weapon. Although she was promptly taken to a nearby hospital, she succumbed to her injuries later that evening.

Preliminary investigations by the Pune police suggest that the attack was triggered by a financial dispute between the two colleagues, both employed as accountants at WNS Global Services in the Yerwada area. Reports indicate that Shubhada had borrowed approximately ₹4.5 lakh from Kanoja over the past two years, primarily to cover her father’s medical expenses. Kanoja had been pressuring her to repay the money and had even contacted her father to reiterate his demands.

Police believe the assault stemmed from escalating tensions over the unpaid debt. Media reports also further revealed that Kanoja had been threatening Shubhada prior to the incident.

Following the attack, Kanoja was detained based on a complaint filed by the victim’s sister. The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act.
