CM Sonowal Directs Assam Police to Arrest Garga Chatterjee for Degrading Sukapha on Social Media

GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal ordered the arrest of Garga Chatterjee and instructed Assam Police to go to West Bengal for the same. Chatterjee had made derogatory statements against Sukapha, the founder of the Ahom Kingdom, on Twitter.

In a series of tweets, Chatterjee had called the great Ahom king a Chinese invader and had raised questions to the Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal about the state celebrating ‘Asom Divas’ in commemoration of Chaolung Sukapha. 


However, Chaterjee later deleted the tweets.

On June 19, CM Sonowal directed Guwahati Commissioner of Police (CoP), MP Gupta, to lead a team to investigate the matter and bring back Garga Chatterjee from West Bengal.


Speaking to G Plus, CoP M P Gupta said, "We are acting on the orders of the CM and have already sent a team from Guwahati today to get Chatterjee."

"Our team has gone today and they will investigate the matter. Hence, we cannot say when exactly Chatterjee will be in Assam," he added.

Garga Chatterjee has been booked under Section 153 A of Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 67 of Information Technology (IT) Act.

Earlier on June 18, Bhaskar Gogoi, a resident of Dibrugarh had lodged an FIR at Dibrugarh Police Station against Garga Chatterjee who is a resident of Kolkata.
