GUWAHATI: A lack of free and safe parking space in and around the Guwahati Railway Station has been reported by several residents of the city. G Plus received several complaints from local Guwahatians this week complaining about the severe lack of space around the station.
People who work and live in and around the city of Guwahati frequently use the railways to travel to and fro; since it is still relatively a viable option. But, these tax-paying, hardworking passengers of the railways suffer one major issue - the severe lack of free public parking space around the city’s railway station.
Depeesh Kumar, a shopkeeper in the station, has a hard time finding a parking spot for his scooter. He said, “For the past 5-6 months, the free parking has been blocked without any explanation. We local commuters face this problem daily, it used to be free parking. There is no official board saying it's railway official parking either but only railway employees use it. There is just a rope and barricade to prevent common people from parking there and the way to this blocked parking is also very unusual”.
When G Plus questioned a railway employee he said, “We have so many employees here, everyone has a vehicle. So, we need space too. There is no designated parking as such for railway employees. We park there because we need to, we stay here all day long! It's our right to park and feel safe about our vehicle too. The Government should have done prior planning. Now, it's a major issue for both parties. The employees and the public”.
The issue is indeed a situation that needs the immediate attention of higher authorities.
