This was announced by Secretary of the Department of School Education & Literacy, Sanjay Kumar, on Monday, December 23.
“Central Government has taken this decision intending to improve the learning outcome among children,” Kumar shared on social media platform ‘X’.
Under the revised policy, students who fail will be given an opportunity to retake the test within two months. However, if they fail the retest, they will not be promoted to the next grade.
Schools, however, will not expel students up to class 8, ensuring continued access to education.
The move marks a shift in the country’s education policy, which had previously emphasised automatic promotion up to class 8 under the Right to Education Act.
