GUWAHATI: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the Commissioner (Appeals), Central GST & CE, Guwahati and a middleman in an alleged bribery of ₹3.83 lakh on September 29 in Guwahati.
A case was registered against Commissioner (Appeals), Central GST & CE, Guwahati and three middlemen on a complaint. It was alleged that the complainant executed construction work related to NF Railway and raised bills.
The Additional Commissioner, Central Goods & Service Tax, Dibrugarh raised a demand for Service Tax amounting to ₹48,43,034.
Aggrieved with the order of the Additional Commissioner, Central Goods & Service Tax, the Complainant preferred an appeal before the Commissioner (Appeals), CGST, Central Excise and Customs, Guwahati against the adjudication order.
It was further alleged that during one of the hearings of the said appeal, the Commissioner demanded a bribe of ₹4,50,000 (i.e. @ of 10% of the demand of Service Tax) through middlemen, which was further negotiated to ₹3.83 lakh to settle the matter.
CBI laid a trap and caught the middleman while accepting the bribe of the said amount on behalf of the Commissioner (an IRS Officer). The Commissioner was also caught.
Searches were conducted at the premises of the accused which led to the recovery of incriminating materials.
Both the arrested accused will be produced before the competent court, an official CBI release here said.
