Casual games like Ludo King are the most played in India as per a recent study throughout the country.
India retained its position as one of the top countries globally for mobile game downloads with 15.4 billion downloads in 2023, as over 40% of users stated that they’ve now graduated beyond casual games to play other genres, although casual games like Ludo King, Candy Crush and Temple Run were the most played, while Midcore games were the top games gamers paid for.
According to the report, around 25% are of Indian gamers are paying users, with the number of paying users seeing an increase of 17% compared to the previous year, as the gaming industry clocked $3.1 Billion in 2023 and is expected to hit $7.5 Billion by 2028, with the report anticipating that the industry will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 20%, driven primarily by growth of in-app purchases in casual and midcore games and a rise of in-game advertising revenues.
Furthermore, the report stated that the recognition of esports as an official sport has lent credibility to the segment as government policies have established separate legislation and taxation between games with cash-based outcomes and games with non-cash based outcomes, however it also pointed out that the tax demands and the value of notices served by the Indian Government far exceeded the estimated revenue of $4 Billion.
