GUWAHATI: According to the Indian Council of Medical Research – National Cancer Registry Programme (ICMR - NCRP), the estimated incidence of cancer cases in India has increased between the years 2022-2024.
The data was revealed by Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, in response to a question raised in the Lok Sabha by Bihar MPs Rama Devi and Mahabali Singh.

As per the data, India had a total of 14,61,427 cancer cases in 2022, with the number rising up to 14,96,972 in 2023 and reaching 15,33,055 in 2024.
The Health Ministry further revealed that the Indian Government had taken initiatives for strengthening of Tertiary Care Cancer Facilities Scheme, a total of 19 State Cancer Institutes (SCIs) and 20 Tertiary Care Cancer Centres (TCCCs) have been approved under the scheme, including one in Guwahati at the Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH), while a Cancer Treatment Facility has also been approved at AIIMS, Guwahati.

Additionally, technical and financial support is provided to states and union territories under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) by the Department of Health & Family Welfare, which focuses on three cancers including oral cancer, breast cancer and cervical cancer, the three most prevalent types of cancer in the country.
The World Cancer Research Fund International had earlier said that there were an estimated 18.1 million cancer cases around the world in 2020, of which, 9.3 million cases were in men and 8.8 million in women, with breast cancer being the most common with nearly 2.26 million cases, followed by Lung cancer with 2.20 million cases and colorectal cancer with 1.9 million new cases in 2020.
