BTC Polls: BPF, UPPL in Close Contest; BJP Emerges as King Maker

GUWAHATI: The Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) are locked in a neck to neck battle, while Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is making its presence felt in the ongoing counting for the 40 member Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections.

As reported at 5 pm today, December 12, BPF has gained momentum and is currently at 13 seats, followed by BJP with 11 seats, while UPPL is still on the lead with 14 seats.

The elections of BTC assumes significance as Assam is going to polls in the next seven months.

The relationship between two allies BPF and BJP has turned sour in the run-up to the poll campaign. BJP's state leadership has openly denounced BPF leaders in the campaign trail.

Since its inception in 2003, BPF has ruled the council for three terms and seeking re-election.

The results of the Bodoland Territorial Council elections will set the tone for the upcoming Assam assembly election slated to take place early next year.
