BREAKING | Centre Appoints Himanta Biswa as Chairman for ST status committee, to finalise modalities in 20 days

GUWAHATI: The BJP-led Central government has formed a ministerial-level committee for the Scheduled Tribes (ST status) of 6 communities from Assam. BJP leader and Assam cabinet minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma has been appointed as the Chairman. Chandan Brahma cabinet minister and leader of BPF (Bodoland People's Front) will be the convenor for this committee. Other ministers included in the committee are Naba Kumar Doley, Pallab Lochan Das and Tapan Gogoi.

“Yes, a committee has been formed by the Centre. This committee will finalise the modalities (method or procedure) for granting the ST status to these 6 communities from Assam. It will ensure that the interests of other communities with existing ST status are not harmed. The modalities will be sent to the Union Home Ministry. This will be done within next 15-20 days. Based on this a discussion will take place and then Central government will take the final decision, said Dilip Saikia, General Secretary, Bharatiya Janata Party, Assam.

"Though it has been decided that the ST status will be given, but the little confusion that remains will be cleared so that the interests of other tribes are not harmed,” added Saikia.
